Three years ago, more than ten thousand people lost their lives in Yingxiu, the epicenter of the deadly Wenchuan earthquake. Today, their relatives and friends came back to the small town to mourn lost loved ones.

A memorial ceremony at the Xuankou middle school in Yingxiu town.

Hundreds attended the ceremony, including family members of those who died, residents of the old county, soldiers and rescuers.

Others showed their grief more privately.

Early Thursday morning, fire crackers at the tomb yards broke the usual silence in the newly built town. Mr and Mrs Lan were here for their grandson. There's no tomb stone for the young man.

Mrs. Lan, said, "His parents are separated..."

The only son of the Lan's is still single and works in another province. The old couple might never have any grandson to bear the family name.

LI Ji's been living in Guangdong for years. She came back to join the work mending her mom's tomb.

LI Ji, said, "I can never forget the last word mom said on the phone. Be happy. I'll be happy, so that mom won't worry about us in heaven."
