As we all know, sometimes two people getting married for a long and happy life together doesn't always work out. This MAY explain why so many couples, in particular the post-80s generation, are choosing to sign a prenuptial agreement - before joining hands in marriage.

Who owns what? That's the practical, but rather unromantic question.

A marriage is supposed to provide lifelong love and support. But when a husband and wife fall out, a premarital notarization can often help clear up the matter of property ownership.

In Beijing, the number of couples choosing this option is on the rise, with the post-80s generation taking the lead. One notary office says 20 to 30 year olds account for 85 percent of all cases.

In 2004, the office received 22 prenuptial applications. Five years later, that number has jumped up to 82.

Wu Fengyou, from Beijing Fangyuan Notary Office said, "There are more applications year on year. As our society develops, citizens are owning more property, such as houses and cars. And their awareness of the law has increased."

The arrangement draws a line in the sand between a couple's possessions, specifying clearly what belongs to whom. It can also help to ease the doubts of some parents, over their offspring's choice of partner.

After all, it's they who are often bankrolling the marriage, and funding a home for the happy... or maybe not so happy couple.
