It's been 24 distressing hours underground for 12 miners trapped in a flooded coal mine in Guiyang city, southwest China's Guizhou Province.

The race is on to save the miners lives after rescuers received strong life signs from the men hours after the accident occurred. Rescuers are currently pumping out water and drilling a ventilation shaft. But drilling efforts were stopped after potential deadly gases were released.

As a result, new plans have been drawn up and a fourth water pump added to help drain the tunnels. The cause of the accident is under investigation.
