As the world marks International Children's Day, one school in Hunan province is struggling to get by. Although being short on supplies, the children are studying hard.

This is Chazhai primary school in Fenghuang, in southwest Hunan province.

Having only one teacher, two dilapidated classrooms and 30 students, this school is located deep in the mountains.

Conditions here are horrible.

Even the books have been donated.

But the children are all learning happily.

This is 9-year-old Ma Yuxing. Both her parents are farmers.

With no one to look at after her 2-year old sister, she has to take her along to school. Despite the distraction of having to baby-sit and learn at the same time, she is an excellent student. In her village where most people speak the Miao language, she's one of the most proficient at mandarin.

Mr. Wu has been teaching here for 4 years. His desk broke last year and now is forced to correct students' homework on their desks.

Ma Yurong, Student, said, "I hope Mr. Wu can get a good teaching desk. He can correct our homework on it."

The day consists of four classes.(nat sound) When school is out, Ma Yuxing carries her sister back home. After a 3 kilometer walk, she finally arrives home and begins to cook right away.

Ma Yuxing said, "Every morning, I finish laundry first and then go to school. My parents are too busy and tired raising the family."

Her wish on children's day is simple.

"I hope my sister can grow up quickly, so she can take care of herself, so I can study harder."

On the morning of children's day, instead of playing with her friends, Ma Yuxing gets together with them to search for edible fresh water snails. She wants to sell them out to help pay for her school supplies.
