It's been 19 years since China and Kazakhstan established diplomatic relations. And President Hu Jintao's on-going visit aims to lay the foundation for the future development of ties.

China and Kazakhstan, who share a 17 hundred kilometer long border, are members of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization.

The two countries forged diplomatic relations in 1992. Since then, nearly a hundred delegations in the fields of politics, security, energy and culture have made exchanges to foster bilateral relations.

Sun Zhuangzhi, director of Central Asian Department of CASS, said, "The relations between China and Kazakhstan created a friendly environment for contacts between China and other independent states of the former Soviet Union."

Economic ties between the two neighbors are the highlight of the relationship. Kazakhstan is now China's biggest trading partner in Central Asia. Trade hit 20 billion US dollars in 2010, up 45 percent from the previous year. The number is also 50 times the trade volume during the early years of the two countries diplomatic relationship in the 1990s. And a high-speed railway, which will link the two countries, is now under construction.

The two sides are also continuing to develop cooperation in the energy sector as well. In 2005, the Atasu-Alashankou oil pipeline came into operation, indicating bright prospects for the export of Kazakh oil to burgeoning markets. When Kazakhstan's president visited China last December, the two countries reached an agreement on main principles guiding the construction of the second stage of the China-Kazakhstan oil pipeline. They also discussed constructing a natural gas pipeline between the two countries.
