Cutthroat competition among Chinese universities

07-04-2011 12:03 BJT

The plight of students applying to Fudan University is only one of the more stark examples of the fierce competition between Chinese universities. Many come up with other underhanded tactics in a bid to attract top students, but as Fintan Monaghan tells us, the public are far from impressed by their actions.

What's happening to students applying for Fudan University is not rare.

This is the micro blog of one teacher working at the recruiting center at Fudan University, he says many Chinese universities are using all kinds of shady tactics to attract students.

Fei Wei, teacher of recruiting center of Fudan Univ., said, "These days, the competition among Chinese universities is very fierce, leading to many strange things to happen. Some university staff speak badly of other universities in order to prevent students from applying there."

Meanwhile, parents and students have come out strongly against these tactics.

A parent said, "Students have their right to choose their preferred university. Teachers should not resort to cheating students into changing their university preference. That's bad."

A student said, "Universities' competition should be based on their academic strengths. It's a mean trick to take such an action."

As for the so called pre-enrollment agreement students signed with Fudan University, some scholars say all the agreements are invalid, with the exception of the self-enrollment agreements of Fudan and Jiao Tong Universities in Shanghai based on in-house exams conducted by the universities.

Xiong Bingqi, scholar on education, said, "Some students get high grades in the national college entrance exam, and staff from some top universities promise to admit them if they apply for their university. Such actions mislead students."

Many fear that if the cutthroat competition among Chinese universities is not curtailed, the students will be the ones who end up paying the consequences.
