A long anticipated case on the production and sale of clenbuterol went to trial in Henan province Monday morning. Clenbuterol is a poisonous chemical believed to boost the growth of lean meat on livestock, and is used mostly on pigs. Its use as an additive in stock feed is prohibited in China. The court has handed out harsh sentences including a suspended death penalty.

The open hearing has been taking place in the Intermediate People's Court of the city of Jiaozuo. Five suspects who participated in the production and distribution of clenbuterol have been prosecuted for the crime of "endangering public security by using dangerous means." They were later pronounced guilty. One was sentenced to a suspended death sentence while other suspects got sentences ranging from nine years in prison to life.

In March, CCTV reported on the clenbuterol scandal in farms located in Henan province, which led to a police crackdown on production and dealing in the chemical. The suspects were responsible for producing and selling over 2,700 kilograms in eight provinces, generating an illegal profit of 2.5 million yuan. Clenbuterol is believed to be poisonous to humans.
