In Shangrao city in east China's Jiangxi Provice, a multiple-vehicle collision has killed 17 people and injured four others. The crash took place on the the Shanghai-Kunming expressway on Saturday morning.

Gigantic trucks are over turned like toys. A mini-bus was mangled into pieces of crippled metal. This disastrous scene comes less than half a month after the Ministry of Public Security launched a national traffic safety overhaul following a fatal road traffic accident in mid-July.

Local police explained how the accident took place. Yang Jianyun, traffic police in Jiangxi province, said, "It took place at around half past four Saturday morning. A truck rear ended another, tumbled over and skidded into the opposite lane. It was then smashed into by a lorry, which rolled after impact, and slammed into a passenger mini-bus."

Four children were among the dead. Police are trying to identify all the bodies. Twelve people died at the scene with five others dying in hospital. Four are still receiving treatment and are now in stable condition.

The truck that rear-ended the other was suspected of being overloaded. The driver was also allegedly fatigued.

The mini-bus was overloaded with 13 more people than designed to hold. It was also suspected of speeding. Police say an investigation into the crash is still underway. The expressway resumed traffic five hours after being sealed for clean-up.
