With less than 20 days to go before a World Cup Asia Zone qualifying match, China's national football team has chosen Spanish coach Jose Antonio Camacho to head up the new campaign. With rumors of a sizeable salary, Camacho is expected to lead the Chinese team to the 2014 Brazil World Cup, despite the team's poor World Cup record.

The 56-year-old former Real Madrid player and coach signed a three-year contract to coach China. He was officially presented at a news conference on Sunday. Camacho brings with him his own coaching team with several experts. The experienced Spaniard coached the Spanish national team to the quarterfinals of the 2002 World Cup. But for now, he will be challenged by China's first World Cup Asia Zone qualifying match against Singapore on September 2nd, and after that, Brazil.

Jose Antonio Camacho, head coach, said, “It is an honor to be the head coach of the Chinese national team, and I am happy to accept the position, though I know we are facing challenges. Our goal is to enhance the ability of the Chinese team, and to qualify for the 2014 World Cup.”

In the past, China hired several foreign coaches to lead its team, but only Bora Milutinovic was celebrated for guiding them to qualify for the 2002 World Cup. As a foreign coach, Camacho obviously understands that getting to know the Chinese team is an extremely important task before him. And he believes the team has potential to succeed.

Jose Antonio Camacho, head coach, said, “I have watched 5 to 6 Chinese games so far, trying to get familiar with the current situation of the team and its characteristics.”

China's 73rd place in world rankings and poor track record on the world stage have caused considerable pain for Chinese fans. In addition, the sport has suffered corruption and match-fixing scandals in recent years. However, football remains one of the most popular sports in China, attracting a great number of fans nationwide.
