Chinese rail authorities have increased train speeds six times since 1997. Until then, express trains running on old lines could travel at a maximum of 140 Km per hour.

The latest speedup took place in April 2007. After that, trains running on the Beijing-Shanghai line, the Beijing-Ha'erbin line, and the Beijing-Guangzhou line reached a top speed of 200 km per hour. On lines connecting Qinhuangdao and Shenyang, some trains run at up to 250 km per hour.

Even secondary lines across the rest of the country saw speeds increase. But the big change came in August 2008. The Beijing-Tianjin high-speed line opened with a top speed of 350 km per hour. At the end of 2010, China's CRH 380A train broke a world record for the fastest commercial train at 486 km per hour.
