Rescuers have stepped up pumping water out of the flooded pit as rescue operations on the ground are continuing to try to save the trapped workers.

Time ticks on. The rescue plan is being fine-tuned according to the latest situation. Difficulties remain, as the flood poses a challenge to the rescue process.

Meng Bincheng, chief engineer from Rescue Command Center of State Administration of Work Safety, said, "We're trying to get close to as many tunnels as possible, so as to find the place where workers are trapped. But some tunnels are inaccessible because of the flood."

12 pumping machines keep working in the two mines' entrances. Nearly 80,000 cubic meters of water had been pumped out as of Saturday, and the water level underground has dropped by over 14 meters.

But the lack of design drafts of the coal mine makes it difficult to be certain about anything. "We don't know the whereabouts of trapped ones, but they are possibly alive, we've stepped up the pumping, and are trying to drain all the water out in double-quick time."

Flooded Number 4 shaft is connected to the underground tunnel of Number 3 shaft. People are concerned whether there is any possibility of workers being freed from Number 3 shaft.

Meng Bincheng, chief engineer from Rescue Command Center of State Administration of Work Safety, said, "It is not feasible, because the two shafts are connected, their water levels are the same, so both are inaccessible."

Part of the destroyed ventilation system is undergoing repair. Medical workers are standing by to carry the rescued ones to the closest hospital. Three rescued workers are recovering.
