Liu Xiang is probably one of the most popular Chinese athletes that have emerged as cultural icons and who are known to the rest of the world. Being the first Chinese 110-meter hurdler to achieve the triple crown in athletics, Liu Xiang has made history through the years.

Liu rose to fame in 2004 at an IAAF event in Osaka, Japan, where he beat American Allen Johnson with a personal best time of 13.06 seconds. His career reached a peak at the 2004 Athens Olympics, where he won gold.

At the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Liu was unable to compete due to an ankle injury. Since his return to the field following a 13-month absence, Liu has secured gold at the 2009 Asian Athletics Championships as well as the 2010 Asian Games.
