Food safety issues have once again come under the spotlight. According to the Ministry of Public Security, a nationwide campaign against producing gutter cooking oil has been launched by the police and 32 people suspects have been arrested in a cross-province crackdown.

Police began their investigation in March after residents of Ninghai County in eastern China's Zhejiang Province reported that a group of people were buying leftover oil from local restaurants. After careful investigation, police launched their crackdown in mid-July.

More than 1-hundred tons of cooking oil made from gutter oil was seized after police busted the criminal network. Meanwhile, the ministry of Public Security pledged to finally eliminate the illegal cooking oil market. Though not immediately poisonous, gutter oil is believed to cause cancer in the long run.
