Chinese president Hu Jintao has arrived in the French resort of Cannes for the G20 summit, which kicks off on Thursday. Before that he concluded his state visit to Austria by spending the day in Salzburg. Unlike his other trips filled with meetings and ceremonies, Hu had gone off the beaten track for a little cultural exploration.

The Urbanhof farm in the Salzburg suburbs has woken up to a typical morning.

But this is everything but typical in the farm’s 500 years history. Busy preparations were underway for special guests.

President Hu Jintao and his wife, Liu Yongqing, were welcomed by Joseph Haas and his family, in the traditional Austrian way.

The Haas family spans several generations. The eldest is over 80, and the youngest just 3. The farm’s some 100 cows produce 610 tons of milk annually, with just three family members at work.

Hu said the farm’s management model and environmentally friendly methods set a good example for China. In reply Haas expressed his wish to market his products to China one day.

Later in the day, he visited the home of Mozart in Salzburg. A trip comprised of concerts and a tour of the Austrian National Library, it signfies hopes to foster cultural exchanges.

Several agreements were also signed.

The University of Vienna will work with its Chinese partners to develop the Confucius Institute which teaches Chinese culture and language.

And a joint venture will be set up to allow the best art works from both countries to be viewed by more people.

All too soon it was back to business, as the president arrived in the French resort of Cannes for the G20 summit.
