The successful second-docking brings China one step closer to building an International Space Station. China’s space lab project began with the successful launch of the space lab module Tiangong-1 on September 29th.

The module then docked successfully with spacecraft Shenzhou-8 on November 3, being China’s first space docking attempt. The joined craft began to adjust its position after flying for more than 10 days, in preparation for the second docking Monday. Shenzhou-8 is scheduled to return to Earth on Thursday.

During its two-year life span, Tiangong-1 will conduct two more docking missions in 2012 performed by two other Shenzhou craft, at least one of which will be manned. China expects to begin building a space lab and station soon after, and put its first manned space station into space around 2020.
