Lingering haze in Beijing is causing a slowdown on transport links in and out of the capital. It’s also adding to ongoing public concern over the city’s air quality. CCTV Reporter Zhang Nini reports.

It began early on Sunday morning... and could yet last several days.

A blanket of thick fog has reduced visibility to less than 500 meters in some parts of Beijing -- crippling traffic and delaying flights.

Visibility is so bad that some highways have had to be closed, including the major routes to Tianjin and Pingu. While urban streets are lit up with a long line of car fog lights.

Many have left their cars at home, to take the city’s public transport.

"It’s not safe to drive in this weather. The subway is a better choice. "

For some, the dense fog is affecting more than their travel plans.

"I got ill a couple of days ago, and haven’t quite bounced back. I’m afraid the weather will worsen my condition. Wearing a mask seems the best thing to do on a day like this."

"I’m keeping track of air quality reports. A mask will help fend off pollution, and protect my respiratory system."

"I will try to go out less on days like this, and always keep windows shut."

According to the Beijing Municipal Environmental Protection Bureau, Beijing’s air quality stood at grade 2 on Sunday. It’s likely to fall as the fog continues.
