Symphony orchestras usually require years of training, and aren’t exactly known as a grass-roots phenomenon. But in Huangshi City in central China’s Hubei Province, a group of ordinary people have formed their own symphony orchestra, which is now being hailed as the pride of the city.

Recognize the tune? It’s "Dance of Yao People", but not like you’ve ever heard before. This new version is performed by a symphony orchestra, whose members include a market stall keeper, a laid off worker and a retired policeman.

But they share one thing in common - a love for music. Lu Weixian, leader of Huangshi Symphony Orchestra, said, "I always dreamed of one day having my own orchestra. Music is a source of strength and confidence for me."

Having grown up in a musical family, Lu cultivated his passion for music when he just a little boy. He says music created a fantastic world for him and while he may not be young any more, he still pursued his dream of setting up his own symphony orchestra.

The orchestra gradually attracted like-minded people who shared his passion for music.

Percussionist He Huaixin is a retired electrician. His family was very poor, so he had to give up his dream of becoming a musician. But now he has the chance to make up for lost time.

He Huaixin said, "I’m so happy to join this group of people. We are not professional but it does not matter. We work very hard."

After two years of training and preparation, the orchestra’s performance has greatly improved and matured.

Just recently, they undertook an official performance in Huangshi. Receiving rave reviews from the locals.

The instruments are the same, but the music comes from the heart of the musicians. Looking at those people and their passion for music, its easy to believe that no dream is impossible.
