China and the US have held their annual defense consultations in Beijing to control risks of confrontation and avoid misunderstandings between the two militaries. This is the first such engagement since the US announced in September a 5.8-billion-US dollar arms sale to Taiwan and later stepped up its military presence on China’s edges.

Chief of the General Staff of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army Ma Xiaotian says the meeting shows both sides are committed to improving relations, but challenges still remain. He says besides arm sales to Taiwan, US military surveillance missions within China’s Exclusive Economic Zone and US laws that restricted military exchanges pose the biggest threat to defence ties.

The US delegation head, the Secretary of Defense for Policy Michelle Flournoy acknowledges the importance of high-level exchanges, saying she looks forward to having the opportunity to "candidly discuss differences."
