For more on the national environmental conference, we are joined by our reporter, Li Kefu.

Q1: What is the focus of this year’s environmental conference?

Answer: Well, this year’s meeting will draft the environmental protection plan by the government for the next 5 years. This year’s meeting had been postponed due to the uncertainty over the outcome of the World Climate Conference in Durban earlier this month. As the highest-ranking meeting on environmental protection in China, the gathering will focus on the control and reduction of PM2.5, which is the main cause of the hazy skies across Chinese cities, as well as the reduction of carbon emissions. This year’s meeting is the seventh since 1973.

Q2: What are China’s main environmental problems?

Answers: It is widely acknowledged that China faces severe environmental problems. According to the Ministry of Health, pollution has made cancer the leading cause of death in 30 cities and 78 counties nation-wide. The governemnt is now making more efforts to deal with the problem of pollution. In 2009, the Chinese government invested nearly 220 billion yuan in clean technology. And China now produces more wind turbines and solar panels than any other country in the world. Efforts are being made, but there still is a long way to go.
