In Shanghai, some residents have benefited from an affordable-housing program. To meet the living needs of the low-income city dwellers who in recent years have suffered from soaring property prices and high rents, the local government is pushing for large-scale construction of affordable housing project across the city.

Nervous but hopeful...

One year ago, Xu Cunhua was among the first batch of applicants for the affordable housing in Shanghai’s Hongkou district.

At that time, he and his family shared a room that covered only sixteen square meters.

Xu Cunhua said, "We can hardly live in our tiny house. We could only sleep in the attic because the room below is too small."

After months of waiting, Mr. Xu found out that his application had been accepted. He was then able to choose a 55-square-meter apartment. For the whole family, this is a great gift for the new year as well as a brand new start..

Xu’s wife said, "We feel so exited. We love this house and we can hardly fall asleep. We are waiting for the keys of our new house. Everything is going well."

Like the XU’s, many eligible families in Shanghai have benefited from the public housing project since 2009. The total area of the project has reached over 40 million square meters. Based on a plan from the local government, about one million houses will be become available from 2011 to 2015.
