County road made safe for home goers

01-21-2012 09:03 BJT

And the snow has already made trouble for those heading home for the New Year. In China’s central province of Hunan, tens of thousands of migrant workers are boarding crowded buses for the final stretch of their journey. But with snow and rain comes ice, rendering roads slippery and dangerous . Luckily, there are always people looking to help.

This is Longhui county.

20,000 people are expected along provincial highway 3-1-2.

But it’s a long and arduous journey. The 21-kilometer road rises over 1,000 meters. There are more than 30 sharp bends and the road gets icy, it can become very dangerous. Luckily, Peng Shilin from the county’s road patrol is looking out for travelers.

Road patrol Peng Shilin said, "I’ve tried scattering coal on the icy road. It works better than salt."

Peng had been driving along these roads for many years before joining the county’s road patrol. No one understands the difficulties of driving on icy mountain roads better than him. He chose the four most dangerous locations and went about securing them.

With safer roads, people driving through the county have noticed the improvements.

A cargo driver said, "The coal is very helpful. Else my truck couldn’t climb up the steep slope."

During the past few years, many people have been stranded by the icy road conditions. But this year, Peng Shilin hopes everyone can get home on time for New Year’s eve.
