Chinese VP holds talks with Turkish President

In Turkey, Vice President Xi Jinping has held talks with Turkish President Abdullah Gul. The two sides have exchanged views on bilateral relations and regional and international affairs of common concern.

Earlier in a written interview with Turkish media, Xi welcomed Turkish investment in north-west China’s Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region, an area where the two countries have had differences in the past.

Xi Jinping said promoting economic growth in China’s far western regions has been a high priority for the central government.

Xinjiang’s GDP growth rate stood at 12 percent last year, high above the national average. Vice President Xi is also expected to attend a business forum in Istanbul on Wednesday, where he is likely to talk discuss growing trade ties.
