To talk more about the progress of China-US relations in recent years, we are joined in the studio by my colleague Wu Haojun.

Q1: Relations between China and the US have had their ups & downs in the past decades. But the progress has been widely recognized. Please give us more background on that.

A1: When we talk about China US relations, the foremost items on the table are often political and economic relations. Political analysts on both sides agree that there’s been an unforeseen frequency of dialogues and cooperation in recent years. The most recent visit by Vice President Xi Jinping to the US is just one such example. Now, turning to trade, according to customs data, in 1979 China-US bilateral trade volume stood at a mere 2.4 billion dollars. And in a span of about 30 years, it grew a whopping 180 fold to over 446 billion. Now I understand some critics are saying that China-US trade relations have been developing at the expense of America’s own economic well-being. But the hard figures show that the US has profited, too. According to the US-China national trade committee, in the past 10 years, US exports to China have grown more than 460%.

Q2: Certainly, China-US relations have achieved much progress in the past 3 decades. But challenges and disputes in some areas still remain. Tell us more about that.

A2: There are indeed challenges and disputes that remain to be solved. Here as a gauge of public opinion in the US towards China, we have results from a recent poll conducted by ABC News and the Washington Post. According to the poll, 52% of Americans expressed an unfavourable impression of China, as opposed to 37% who see China favourably. But don’t jump to a dismal conclusion just yet. According to international relations expert Jin Canrong from Renmin University, China and the US will always be both competitors and partners. And judging from the progress we’ve seen from recent years, the bond of partnership is stronger than ever.
