February 29th is a rare day on the calendar, but it also marks international Rare Disease Day. On this day, hundreds of patient organizations from more than 40 countries and regions worldwide are organizing awareness-raising activities around the slogan “rare but strong together”.

Here in China, the first China rare disease summit is also underway. The summit is being held jointly by the China Dolls Care and Support Association and the Genetic Branch of The Beijing Medical Association.

According to a report from the summit, rare diseases are in fact not so rare in China, with possibly tens of millions of patients. The country does not currently have an official definition of the concept, and many patients suffer from challenges related to medical treatment, education, and finding jobs.
