Wen Jiabao said, "I have served as premier for nine years, which is by no means easy or ordinary. Due to my incompetent capability, institutional and other restraints, there is still much room for improvements. Although I have never committed any intentional error in my work or failed in my duty as head of the top executive body of the country, I should assume responsibility for the problems that have occurred in China’s economy and society during my term of office, for which I feel truly sorry."

Q1. Premier Wen today held his last NPC annual press conference. What are the points you found the most interesting?

Q2. Were you surprised by the vigour of his call for political reform? How urgent is political reform in China?

Q3. How can political reform be achieved? For economic reform, pilot measures were set up in designated areas. Is something similar possible for political reform?

Q4. If we look back at Wen Jiabao’s 10 years as Premier. What would you say are his most important accomplishments? And where didn’t he go far enough?

Q5. China’s top legislator, Wu Bangguo, reaffirmed that China would not deviate from the socialist path. The past three decades have witnessed the country’s change from a postwar communist society to a new form of governance and development, never seen before in modern history. By comparison with the western-style parliamentary system, what are China’s advantages and disadvantages?
