Rescuers in northeast China’s Jilin Province are working around the clock to try to rescue 12 miners trapped in a flooded colliery. Water is currently being pumped out of the main tunnel, but it could still be up to three days before rescuers are able to reach the men.

It may not look like a strong flow of water, but it’s a crucial step towards finding the 12 men.

Rescuers say getting the pumping equipment into such a narrow space underground is no easy task -- one of the reasons the draining operation didn’t begin until nearly 60 hours after the flood.

Rescuers say that even if the drainage operation continues at the current rate, it will take two or three days to pump out all the water.

Zhang Enbo, CPC secreatery of Jiaohe, Jilin Province, said, "We’re still working on speeding up the water pumping. The current rate is slower than we were hoping for."

The mine was flooded on Friday morning, when water from a neighbouring colliery ran into the Fengxing coal mine. 58 workers managed to escape, but 12 others remain underground.
