This year's Beijing auto show is seeing lots of unveilings from domestic and international brands alike. But, although it is now the world's largest car market, China's own auto brands have a steep road ahead if they want to compete with the more established players.

Cute, clean-cut, or cutting-edge, Chinese car brands are showing their stuff at the Beijing auto show. But, foreign and joint-ventures are putting up some pretty stiff competition.

For Chinese car brands, it's clear that a greater emphasis on cutting-edge technologies and advanced design is essential for survival.

Huang Xiangdong, Vice President of Guangzhou Automobile Group Co., said, "I think the key fact is that (Chinese) native auto makers have to enhance their core competences, mainly on new products development and in technology research R&D."

Chinese car makers also understand that gaining a foothold requires bringing together both high quality and value in their vehicles.

Stella Li, Senior Vice President of BYD Company Ltd., said, "When you have a good quality, really good technology, and good price, very competitive price. Then it is kind of non-refusal proposal for customers. It is the only way to survive."

They're certainly working hard to achieve those goals. New designs like Guangzhou auto group's new SUV Trump chi and alternative energy models, such as BYD's Chin are making sure of that.
