Head of China-Japan Friendship Assoc. visits Japan amid growing tensions

The Chairman of the China-Japan Friendship Association is in Tokyo. Tang Jiaxuan's eight-day visit comes amid growing tensions between the two countries.

On Wednesday, Tang Jiaxuan attended a lunch meeting with the Japanese Minister of Foreign Affairs, Koichiro Gemba. He's also had friendly talks with representatives from Japan-China friendship groups.

Earlier this month, the governor of Tokyo announced a controversial plan to purchase land on the Chinese Diaoyu Islands. A few days later, the Japanese authorities announced that two Chinese fishermen were under investigation after their boat collided with another.

Tokyo's governor offers to buy Diaoyu Islands

This year marks the 40th anniversary of the normalization of China-Japan diplomatic relations. But recently, Shintaro Ishihara, Tokyo's governor, announced to purchase three islets of the Diaoyu Islands which belong to China.
