China's Minister of National Defense has said China currently believes the Huangyan Island confrontation can be solved through diplomacy.

In his first comments on the dispute, Liang Guanglie said on Tuesday that whether military action will be taken will be decided by China's overall diplomatic need. He added that he believed the General Administration of Customs and the Foreign Ministry would resolve the issue properly. The Chinese Vice Foreign Minister said Wednesday that China did not start the current standoff in the South China Sea. The country is calling for restraint and dialogue to defuse tensions in the region.

Cui Tiankai, Chinese Vice Foreign Minister, said, "I must point out that the current state of affairs was not created or provoked by China and China does not want to see more tensions in the area. We have been committed to dialogue and diplomacy as a way to settle the issue all along. All of these remarks and deeds violate the aspirations of the people in the region to be good neighbors, cooperate and jointly develop their interests."
