In Shanghai where general practitioners have been introduced into its community healthcare centers since 2010, aiming to ease the pressure on overcrowded hospitals. The program has met with success and is planning to add more doctors this year.

For many residents in Shanghai, there is a chance to say goodbye to the crowded hospitals. Thanks to the public health service plan, some residents have received in-house medical assistance from trained doctors.

The 62-year-old woman surnamed, Xue, is one of them who has benefited from the program.

Instead of visiting larger hospitals frequently, Xue’s problems can be solved in the community medical centre.

Under the scheme, doctors will come to each community to provide medical service. They are in charge of a certain number of patients through a one-to-one style of health care. Online health records are set up for each patient. Online medical consultations are also available.

A patient in Shanghai said, "The one-on-one style is good, because I can have my own doctor who understands my health condition well. The online medical record can help us understand better my treatment. It saves time for both of us."

The program also brings convenience to larger hospitals.

Prof. Zhu Sahnzhu from Zhongshan Hospital, said, "In many top-level hospitals, about 70 percent of the patients can be treated in medium level hospitals or in community medical centers, which means more doctors are needed there. Also, it can deal with the overcrowd issue in many larger hospitals."

Shanghai plans to train and introduce 500 more general parishioners into its community healthcare centers this year.
