Many love clothing and accessories from big designers. But how about a designer bag made of rubbish? In Hong Kong, two designers are building up a recycling business that turns old taxi seat covers into handbags.

Hong Kong is famous for its tall towers and even higher aspirations. But it has its headaches. In 2010, over 13,000 tonnes of waste went into landfills everyday, and now Hong Kong is running out of landfill space a lot faster than expected.

Billy Potts, co-founder of Handsome Bag Company, said, "We’re interested in the story behind that material, the story that it tells. It’s kind of an experience that a lot of people share, you know everybody has been in a taxi, and everybody understands the design aesthetic which we are going for because we take the livery of the taxi, the colours, the colour scheme and translate it into the bag."

A messenger bag is priced at 120 US dollars. According to Potts, 95 percent of their products are made from discarded materials. The Handsome Bag Company is now expanding locally through different retail outlets and their own online shop. And they are receiving international orders now.

Billy Potts, co-founder of Handsome Bag Company, said, "We don’t have to look to the rest of the world to take our cues and say we are inferior or anything like that. I mean, if anything, we can be just as creative as anyone else, like London or New York or Tokyo and Paris."

Potts and Ng also add they would like to keep exploring and working with different companies and designers to keep their creative output high. So despite the success they’ve already found, it seems they’re just getting started.
