Philippine President Benigno Aquino has just presided over a full Cabinet meeting to find a solution to the territorial dispute with China over Huangyan Island in the South China Sea.

The Philippine Cabinet met for the second time in a week.

Top of the agenda: the country’s relationship with China.

In the past month, the waters around Huangyan Island in the South China Sea have been peaceful...thanks to the fishing moratoriums imposed by China and the Philippines.

But the Philippines says it will end its moratorium early and its navy may escort Philippine fishing boats back to the waters around the Island.

President Aquino also says he may ask the US to deploy spy planes over the South China Sea.

China has urged the Philippines to act in a proper manner.

Liu Weimin, Spokesman of Chinese Foreign Ministry, said, "We hope the relevant party will do more things that are conducive to regional peace and stability."

But Manila fought Mandarin response to a question about a newspaper commentary denouncing Philippine provocation.

Edwin Lacierda, Presidential Spokesman, said, “Can I say to the Chinese ’xiao xin yi dian?’ Be a little careful about your statements.”

Lacierda is ethnic Chinese and can speak Mandarin fluently. Philippine media says his warning was, just to show off his language skills.

Also on Thursday, the Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs said it had summoned the Chinese Ambassador a day earlier, and handed her a note protesting China’s recent declaration that placed the entire South China Sea under the jurisdiction of its newly established Sansha City.

As the Philippine Cabinet prepared for its discussion, voices were heard in Manila saying the government should continue talks with China instead of sending back ships.
