Continuous downpours in Chongqing have brought not only fast-flowing water, rising water levels, but also danger to those who work nearby..

Two workers on a construction site, 50 meters from the Jialing River bank were trapped on Wednesday. The rising water level and nightfall worsened the situation.

The river, which is flowing at three times its normal volume also threatened the steel frame construction site, which could be washed away.

A rescue team arrived immediately after it got the call, but their effort didn’t go smoothly.

They tried several times, but in vain before having to contact the local marine department to send a ship to the site to help.

After nearly two hours, the two trapped workers were safely rescued.

But more intense work lies ahead with the arrival the second flood peak, regarded as the largest in the flood season.

Heavy rains across southern China are pushing water at the Three Gorges Dam past the flood level. Sluice gates have been opened to discharge the water. On July 3, the Three Gorges opened its sluices to discharge water in Yichang, central China’s Hubei Province. This is the first flood peak at the Dam. The maximum influx into the Three Gorges Reservoir is 42,000 cubic meters per second, 27,000 cubic meters per second more than last year.

The second flood peak passed Chongqing Friday afternoon and is expected to arrive at the Dam on Saturday at up to 50,000 cubic meters per second as it braces for second flood peak.
