In Hong Kong, Traditional Chinese Medicine or TCM is widely used as an alternative remedy to Western medicine for its therapeutic benefits. But now, even animals are feeling the benefits of acupuncture.

For this twelve-year-old cat, Tiny B, relief has finally come. He was diagnosed with kidney failure five years ago, as there was little improvement through drug treatment until he received eletro-acupuncture and natural Chinese herbal medicines in the pet hospital.

Even animals are feeling the benefits of acupuncture.

After three years of treatment, his condition has vastly improved. This hospital veterinarian says TCM is meant to be complimentary to the Western approach.

Angela Yung, veterinarian of Tin Hau Pet Hospital, said, "Western and Chinese medical practices both have strengths and weaknesses. In general we always use the Western approach first to examine and treat the animal. Especially when it’s an acute condition, the strength of Western medicine is necessary to control it. But once the condition is stabilised, Chinese medicine is useful to stimulate the body and balance the energy when Western medicine is unable to achieve that."

Not only traditional Chinese medicine, but also diagnostic methods are applied to the pets.

Even animals are feeling the benefits of acupuncture.

The five elements, referring to gold, wood, water, earth and fire are used in TCM to determine a patient’s susceptibility to certain illnesses. This eleven-year-old cocker spaniel, named Coffee, has been treated through this approach.

Rosy, Coffee’s owner, said, "After diagnosing Coffee we found she has a urinary problem due to too much internal damp heat, the veterinarian prescribed acupuncture on specific areas of her body and Chinese herbal medicine to relieve the condition. The doctor also taught me how to give her an acupressure point massage to further improve her health."

Seems like a combination of Western and Eastern approaches to medicine is what keeps these pets happy and healthy.
