A supply ship, carrying fresh water, food, vegetables and other daily necessities, is heading for Sansha, China’s newly established city in the South China Sea.

Last month, the State Council approved the establishment of Sansha, a prefecture-level city in Hainan, to manage the Xisha, Zhongsha and Nansha islands and their surrounding waters. The city government will be on Yongxing Island, in the Xisha Islands.

The plan is for this to enhance maritime safety and protect the environment. Maritime personnel are working to build infrastructure, buoy tenders, supply bases, light stations and radio stations. China says it was the first to discover and name the reefs, islets and surrounding waters.

In 1959, it became the first country to set up an administrative office to exercise sovereignty over the area.
