Zhong Man: World saber fencer champion

Zhong Man, saber fencer, is going for gold at the London Olympics.

At the age of 25, Zhong became China’s first male Olympic fencing champion at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. This is was the second Olympic gold medal in Chinese fencing history, after Luan Jujie won the women’s foil individual in 1984.

Trained as a track runner, he was discovered by a fencing coach at the age of 15. He was recruited by China’s national fencing team in 2005.

Zhong Man is well-known for besting his opponents with his rapid saber thrusts. His gold medal in 2008 wasn’t just a great achievement for him. I was also a spectacular new beginning for fencing as a sport in China.
