When Sansha city was established, one of the beneficiaries were fishermen there who earn their living from the sea. A fisherman who lives in a fishing village on Yongxing Island, Sansha city, was held hostage by the Philippines back in 1995.

Migrant fisherman Fu Gonda has been living on Yongxing Island, for eleven years, after moving from Qionghai. In 1995, he was one of 62 hostages held by the Philippines for 6 months. He lost his boat in the incident which was a matter of life and death. He welcomed us to his home, despite the poor living conditions. Fishing is his only source of income.

Fu Gongda, fisherman, said, “There’s a very good market for seafood during the typhoon season, I can sell these in just couple of days, but my income varies. I can probably earn about 1,500 yuan to 2,000 yuan a month.”

That small income has to support him and his family in Qiong Hai. He says he misses his family dearly, but the fishing is better around Yong Xing Island.

Fu Gongda said, “I miss my whole family, but fishing around here is not only safer but better protected especially after Sansha city was established.”

According to the Sansha municipal government, improve Sansha fishermen’s living condition is one of the urgent matters on their agenda.

There are about 200 fishermen and their families live on Yong Xing Island, most of them live in the house built by wood, children running around the village, but there are no schools on Yong Xing Island. But after the city was established, a better future will be in store for the fishermen and their families.

The establishment of the Sansha city is going to be a big benefit to fishermen earning a living around the South China Sea. They will have a greater protection as they try and pursue their livelihood.
