Search Ye Shiwen and Doping on Google, and you’ll get over 9 hundred thousand results. Bear in mind that it has been only three days since this 16-year-old Chinese swimmer won her first Olympic gold and became known to most of the world. And that gives you a sense of how far these allegations have spread.

Ye Shiwen began swimming at seven when her teacher noticed her unusually large hands and feet. Her personal best in the 400 individual medley prior the London 2012 Games was 4 minutes, 33 point 79 seconds in the Guangzhou Asian Game in September 2010. In the same year after turning 16, she grew from 160cm to 170cm, providing the young swimmer with more strength and stamina.

For those who have a tough time believing a 16-year-old Chinese girl could better Ryan Lochte in the last leg of the 50m freestyle in the 400 meter IM, here comes a little help. Although Lochte won the event, four swimmers in that final beat him in the last 50m, and all four of them were faster than Ye’s. And in other races, her times have definitely been top notch for women, but not unheard-of.
