Liu Xiang, China’s most watched athlete, used to be widely seen as the most commercially-valued athlete in the country. His advertisement income over the past years has been hard, even now, for other athletes to surpass.

Liu was valued at over 460 million yuan commercially in 2005, one year after he brought home the 2004 Olympic hurdler gold medal and became a record holder. His advertisement income 2 years later was nearly 200 million yuan, and his price plummeted sharply to 130million yuan in 2008 in Beijing Olympic games, where he limped out of the event and broke a billion Chinese hearts.

Winning a gold medal at the Asian Games brought Liu under the spotlight again, and his advertisement income was estimated to be around 130 million yuan. His commercial worth dropped again in 2010 to half of the previous year, when his right foot was still injured.
