Search continues after Sichuan mudslide

Two are still missing as a sudden mudslide struck the Yin-chang-gou Scenic Spot in Southwest China’s Sichuan Province. Rescuers are trying their best to search for the two. While for those lucky enough to survive the accident, it was an experience that no one will forget.

Lawyer Wang Rong who works in Chengdu had never expected her trip would end up in the hospital. She recalled what happened to her that night, which still terrifies her.

Wang Rong, tourist, said, “Some people living next door saw the flood first and they knocked on our door to wake us up. We saw water in our room when we began to get dressed. We rushed out.”

In the dark, Wang Rong and her friends never thought that danger was waiting for them outside the door.

Wang Rong, tourist, said, “We met the mudslide with great force as soon as we went out the door. All of us were hit by it. I thought I would die at that moment.”

A car parked along the road saved her life.

Wang Rong, tourist, said, “A car blocked me. I held the wheel and slowly moved to grasp the door handle. I held it so tight until someone came.”

About an hour later, rescuers found her and sent her to the hospital. Fortunately, Wang was still in good health after the accident. Apart from her, more than 7,000 tourists have been rescued and evacuated from the Yin-chang-gou Scenic Spot. Tourists pulled through the difficulty with the help of the rescuers and each other as well.

Peng Liling, tourist, said, “We let the old and young go first. Some places were so slippery, we had to protect them first.”

Liang Fei, tourist, said, “Honestly, it was a bad trip. But I was touched when I saw people helping each other evacuate.”

A total of 34 people were injured in the accident. Nine have been sent to the hospital. Apart from one badly injured, the others are in good condition.
