In China, students are becoming the target of plastic surgery marketing. Some think cosmetic surgery can give them an aesthetic competitive edge over their peers, but are they ignoring the hidden risks?

Despite knowing the risks, many teenagers are deciding to go under the knife, in the hope of becoming more attractive. Xiaowen is one of them.

The 16-year-old isn’t happy with the way his nose looks, and he’s often been teased about it at school. He says he thinks a more attractive nose will give him more confidence.

Hard to say

At first, his parents didn’t agree, but Xiaowen insisted.

Xiaowen said, "I’m not happy with my nose. I don’t think it’s going to change as i get older, so I’ve decided to make a change."

But Xiaowen’s family is not wealthy, and the money for his surgery would cost the family almost all of its savings.

The doctor says Xiaowen has to wait until he is 18-years-old to be able to make the decision to undergo plastic surgery.

Doctor in orthopedic hospital said, "We don’t advise teenagers to undergo plastic surgery, especially facial reconstructive surgery , because their bones are still growing."

A survey done by China’s Adolescence Rearch Center shows 15% of teenagers are not happy with their appearance and an increasing number want to go under the knife.

Doctors say it’s not good for teenagers’ health if they undergo cosmetic surgery at an early age.

So before even contemplating cosmetic surgery, maybe it’s worth reflecting on the old adage that true beauty comes from within.

Regulation on plastic surgery:

China: It has yet to have a national law or regulation on the age limit and category of plastic surgery. But Guangzhou has become the first citry in China to regulate this industry as the city prohibits juveniles from getting any kind of plastic surgery or tattoo for cosmetic reasons.

Italy: Plastic surgeons risk paying fines of 20, 000 euros and suspension of work for three months if they are caught doing plastic surgery on juveniles.

US, Germany, South Korea: The laws of the countries all require a legal guardians’ informed consent before surgery on a minor.

South Korea, Thailand also ask that parents accompany them during surgery.
