The past week was World Breastfeeding Week. Much attention has been drawn to the need for private nursing rooms in public places. How is the situation for nursing mothers here in the capital?

24-year-old Xu Xiaolan is nursing her baby daughter away from prying eyes. Outside this room, is the bustling Beijing West Railway Station. She is not always as lucky as today to find a room like this.

Xu Xiaolan, passenger, said, "I used to nurse my baby in public. It is really awkward. So I’m really grateful to have this kind of privacy. "

This waiting room is reserved for parents taking care of their children. And the nursing room is inside. Men are not allowed to enter. Here mothers can breast feed their babies and change diapers away from the crowds.

Si Pengyan, staff, Beijing West Railway Station, said, "The waiting room and the nursing room were designed when the station was built in 1996. We wanted to give some private space to mothers."

Nursing mothers find it awkward to look for a private place to express breast milk outside the home. Most have to use a pump in the restroom, nurse in public, or not go out at all. Suitable facilities are really needed in public places.

Chinese mothers have long been enduring this discomfort and inconvenience. A recent survey by China Youth Daily reported that over 86.3% of the public suggested private nursing rooms should be foremost available in airports, railway and bus stations. Department stores and supermarkets were the second most voted for, Followed by hospitals. It is a desperate call from nursing mothers.
