China’s 8-day golden week holiday has come to end. Thanks to the long break, the tourism industry may pocket over 180 billion yuan according to estimation from the China Tourism Academy.

The holiday saw 362 million travellers, up 20% from last year. The huge flow of tourists exhausted resources at many scenic sights. In one day, more than 17,700 desert viewers flocked to Mingsha mountain in Gansu province for a trip on camel back. But too many tourists exhausted the poor animals and some died of fatigue.

Over 180,000 visitors in a single day took in Beijing’s Palace Museum, setting a record high. Tour sites in Nanjing saw inflows of over 900,000 tourists by Thursday, 10-times recommended levels. But alternatives are limited, as the 8-day holiday is among the few holidays long enough to travel, tourists say.
