The heavy snowfall over the past few days has caused travel havoc in Northern China. Heavy snow and sharp temperature drops have iced roads and blocked highways. That's resulted in huge numbers of stranded drivers and even worse.

A long line of vehicles stretches back more than 40 kilometers on the Beijing-Tibet highway. It’s all due to the freezing weather, and more than 12 centimeters of snow on the highway. Some drivers said they’d moved only 10 kilometers over the course of 12 hours. And matters only got worse once the cars began breaking down.

"We are fixing the cars. The battery has run out of power."

Even emergency vehicles found themselves stranded. That means that many drivers don’t even have the basics.

"Officials from the traffic administration gave us some food and water last night. That helped a lot. But now, we’re very thirsty."

This driver is carrying 25 tons of vegetables now all going to rot. Others have taken a different view of the situation. This snowman makes for a little extra company, for example.

Inner Mongolia meanwhile has been contending with heavy snowfall blocking National highway 207. It’s not clear when the road will reopen. Bus services have been stopped and flights cancelled due to the weather. Sadly the weather has taken a morbid toll too.

Three Japanese tourists died in Hebei province after being stranded on a section of the Great Wall. One Chinese tour guide and one Japanese tourist have been found alive and sent to a clinic for treatment. Rescue work was hindered by blizzard conditions.
