CCTV special series "A Decade of Change" covers a wide range of transformations and reforms in Chinese society. Today, we look at the modernization of the country’s military and national defense.

CCTV reporter Hou Na visited a patrol boat brigade in Northeast China’s Jilin Province, to take a look at the PLA’s expanding role and modernization efforts.

Getting equipped for a mission - This daily exercise is a symbol of the army’s drive to safeguard the nation’s territory. The Yalu River divides China and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea. Taking a patrol on the river is never an easy task.

CCTV reporter Hou Na said, “Here I’m on board of a patrol ship, on the Yalu River. The river itself is the boarder-line, alongside the river, one side is China, and the other side is the DPRK. Everyday, the soldiers take a patrol on the surface of the water no matter how the weather conditions are, to safeguard the Chinese territory."

The width of the Yalu River ranges from two hundred meters to more than 2, 000. That requires higher operating skills and absolute attention.

CCTV reporter Hou Na said, "What if there is an emergency on the water?”

A soldier said, "Extreme fog or windy weather will cause us a lot of trouble, so our crew members are all well trained and experienced."

The Yalu River is the only river that lies between China and the DPRK. Being a natural boundary, it requires special attention.

Feng Changyun, brigade chief of Tonghua Patrol Boats Brigade, Jilin Province, said, "Our duty is to monitor the security on the water surface and to watch out for smuggling and human trafficking and to protect Chinese soil. "

Officer Feng says the equipment he uses has improved greatly during the past few years. This was all possible through the PLA’s modernization efforts which have made outstanding contributions to safeguarding the nation’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

In the last two decades, the Chinese military has deployed the largest number of peacekeepers among UN member States. It has also taken part in escort missions along the Somalia coast to fight piracy. As the PLA continues to modernize, it will further strengthen the country’s defences while also contributing to world peace.
