The first session of the 12th Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, China’s top political advisory body, has held its 4th plenary meeting. Members voted to elect the new leadership of the CPPCC National Committee, including the new CPPCC chairman, vice-chairmen, and members of the standing committee.

Yu Zhengsheng was elected chairman of the CPPCC, with 2188 votes in favor, 4 against and 1 abstaining. Yu was born in April 1945. He has an engineering degree from the Harbin Military Engineering Institute and joined the CPC in November 1964. Yu’s reform campaign began in the coastal city of Yantai in Shandong Province, where he initiated one of the country’s first housing reform projects as mayor in the 1980s.

As minister of construction in the late 1990s, Yu put building quality as one of the most important tasks to be addressed. Starting from 2001, Yu served as the Party Secretary of Hubei Province, extending the province’s development focus to counties to seek new growth avenues. In 2007, Yu became Party Secretary of Shanghai municipality.

And in November 2012, Yu was elected to the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China’s Central Committee. Meanwhile, 23 vice chairpersons were also elected at today’s meeting, with Zhang Qingli elected secretary-general. The new leadership is expected to inject more impetus into the top advisory body.

The CPPCC serves as a key mechanism for multi-party cooperation and political consultation, under the leadership of the Communist Party of China. It’s a major symbol of socialist democracy.
