When a fisherman’s net snags, it usually means a loss of time and money for repairs. But for four fishermen in China’s eastern Anhui province, their snagged net brought a historic discovery.

While searching for crabs last week, the fishermen hauled up what has since been identified as a US bomber aircraft from the Second World War.

The plane’s undercarriage, engine and fuselage were all brought to the surface, still bearing the "North American Aviation" engraving. It also had a plate inscribed with the bomber’s serial number and date of manufacture --- February 15, 1943.

A US scholar says the plane was a B-25 bomber from the "Flying Tiger" squadron, a special unit of US military pilots tasked with training Chinese pilots in air combat.
