Crossover: Previous moon missions´ landing spots

12-14-2013 20:30 BJT Special Report: Chang’e-3 Lunar Probe |

The Bay of the Rainbow is indeed a suitable place to make a landing, but the area still has significant amounts of lunar rocks that could make the ground uneven. So the Chang’e 3 must be extra careful when choosing the right spot to land.

Q: And Mangmang, what about other countries? Where did their moon missions land?

A: Let’s take a look at this picture. It shows all the spots where spacecraft from different countries have either landed or crashed. The blue spots were those by America and the red ones by the USSR (or Russia)... they were among the first to undertake such missions in history. And this is the Sea of Tranquillity where America’s first manned mission, the Apollo 11, landed in 1969. Now this is where Chang’E-1 made its hard landing in 2007. Chang’E-2 didn’t follow suit, and instead steered away from the moon. And right here, is the Bay of Rainbow which is the destination of Chang’E-3.
