China becomes third nation to achieve lunar "soft landing"

12-15-2013 20:37 BJT Special Report: Chang’e-3 Lunar Probe |

The successful "soft landing" of China’s Chang’E 3 lunar probe is the first such landing in nearly four decades. This makes China the third nation to carry out such a mission after the United States and the former Soviet Union. Let’s recount some of the key moments as the lander touched down on the moon.

A giant leap for China’s space programme.

The historic moment achieved with the Chang’e 3 lander touching down in the Bay of Rainbows.

The unmanned Chang’e lander, with its six-wheeled rover Jade Rabbit, or "Yutu", is the first to make a soft landing on the moon since 1976, making China only the third country in the world to master that technology.

Early Sunday morning at around 4:35, the rover "Yutu" successfully separated from the lander.

It now embarks on a three-month scientific exploration of the Moon...during this period of time, "Yutu" will photograph and study the Moon’s surface, dig into the lunar soil and carry out geological surveys.

China’s rocket engineers have made considerable progress in recent years.

In June this year, China sent three astronauts in orbit and amongst other things, they docked with an experimental space station.

Chang’e 3 is the third step in China’s lunar program. In 2007, China put the Chang’e 1 lunar probe in orbit around the moon. It then executed a controlled crash on to its surface. In 2010, China sent the Chang’e 2 robotic probe to collect crucial information to pave the way for Chang’e 3’s soft-landing.
