Harbin Int'l ice and snow festival opens

Harbin’s internationally acclaimed ice and snow festival opens on Sunday. Temperatures there have dropped to minus 28 degrees Celsius, but that doesn’t stop locals and tourists having fun in what’s often called a winter wonderland.

Freezing cold in the northeastern city of Harbin, where snow and ice have turned it into a world of white, And many people are enjoying the big chill, including Xu Yubing. For the 67-year-old, winter is play time.

“For us, winter won’t be complete without these activities on ice. I come here every day.”

5-year-old Peng Yu is enjoying his first winter on a sled.

“I used to stay at home in winter. Coming here is great fun, and I want to come back again.”

Tourists have flown in for the Harbin International Ice and Snow Festival.

“I have never seen such a snowy scene and walked on ice before. I’m getting so excited.”

And that excitement from tourists put smiles on the faces of local hotel managers.

George Guo, General Manager of New Gloria Garden Plaza Hotel Harbin, said, “We have more inquires about tickets booking and traffic information, so we have increased this part of customers services to meet their needs.”

The catering industry also benefits.

Eating an ice lolly in Harbin’s winter is a must-have experience for tourists.

Snow in Shanghai has never been so deep. And eating ice lolly here and now is like having hot pot in summer.
